{Recipe} Homemade Butter and Buttermilk

One of our favorite books is Little House in the Big Woods.  We’re in the middle of the Little House series.  The author is very descriptive about different things they did when she was a child.  One of the things she describes making with her mother is butter.  Since we read that, Chloe and Willow have been all about making butter. I finally remembered to buy what we need at the store.  And when you hear the ingredient(s) involved you should understand why it’s silly that we didn’t make it right away, but sadly it’s been a few months since we read the book.  Are you ready for it?  Here it is.  Homemade butter recipe

Ingredient

  • Heavy Whipping Cream

That’s it.  Heavy whipping cream. 833

I was surprised too, but when you think about it, in the days of churning they just put cream in the churn and churned and churned until…butter!

So last week we grabbed some heavy whipping cream at the store and I’m pretty sure this is the easiest thing I’ve ever made in the kitchen.

Instructions

Pour the heavy whipping cream into your mixer (using a standing mixer is recommended since you’ll be mixing for about 10 minutes).839

First you’ll get whipped cream.  Because that’s what happens first when you whip whipping cream.

After a few minutes of mixing, take a spatula and scrape the sides of the bowl, recombining the whipped cream that climbed the sides with the whipped cream at the bottom of the bowl.

Continue whipping your soon-to-be butter.  It will begin to yellow and get chunky.  The chunky butter will separate and when it does you will have butter and buttermilk!  Drain the buttermilk into a jar to save for making buttermilk biscuits or pancakes or something else yummy.  You’ll be left with some super yummy fresh butter (which will go great on your buttermilk biscuits!).  homemade buttermilk

Now, remember all the wonderful things you could do to enhance the fabulous butter you just made: honey, salt, garlic, dill… Yum!butter recipe, cooking with kids
