It’s been quite rainy here…something that requires this mama to have a back up plan for our day. While we did spend some time between rain storms to do some fantastic puddle jumping, we needed something equally fantastic to occupy our non-puddle jumping moments. I’ve been wanting to have some fun with salt dough because it has been a while since we’ve done that and I knew the girls would love it too. So we made little ornaments to hang wherever. 
We chose blue for the color of the dough this time, which worked out great because we did a lot of sea shell designs in our dough and it looked like the shells were just resting in the water. 🙂
Here is the recipe we used to make the dough:
- 2 cups flour
- 2 cups water
- 1 cup salt
- 1 T oil
- 1 t cream of tarter
Combine all the ingredients in a sauce pan and cook over low heat until it thickens. Once it’s thick enough (like play dough) remove it from the heat and let it cool before molding. 
This time I divided the recipe in half and it was actually just the right amount for all of us. The girls loved playing with the dough. Chloe worked hard to perfect each little ornament that she made. Willow shaped her dough into a million different things and even wrapped some little cars in the dough so she could see the imprints they left behind. Laelia had fun rolling it out and squishing it up real good. 
I decided to make imprints of shells and sea stars and even a sea urchin that I found while walking the beach a few days ago.
This is definitely a perfect rainy day activity. They played with the dough for at least an hour and a half. Woo hoo! Mess is fairly minimal as long as you plan ahead and clean up isn’t bad. 🙂
Now, for those not in the know about salt dough, you can either let it air dry for several days, which gives it a nicer finish, or you can bake it at 200 degrees F for a couple hours/until dry.
