What is vermicomposting? It’s raising and breeding worms to use to break down your garden and your compost. But even more than that, as the worms break down the soil and the debris in there, they’re fertilizing! And the fertilizer made by worms is exactly what your garden needs.
Raising worms is easy and fun for the little guys. My boys love them!
Follow these steps to get started and not spend a ton doing it. You can also buy vermicomposters to get started.
1. You will need a deep tote with a lid.
2. Put about 6 inches of rich, airy soil in the bottom with some organic debris for them to break down.
3. Cut a rectangle out of the center of the lid and add some window screen to let the air circulate.
4. Then, add your worms!
5. Make sure they have a few cut up pieces of vegetables sitting on the top of the soil for a food and water source.
As your worm farm grows, add them to your garden beds and let them get to work.
