I love when we find oddities like this! One of the kids found it, and he was really excited. We tossed around different ideas as to what happened, but I think she gave her egg a second shell!
At first it was lighter in appearance. My guess is that she had laid it not too long before it was found. In my 12 years keeping chickens, I have never seen this, but here’s what I think happened. The hen formed her egg like she normally would. The egg got the shell and was given it’s colorant, but rather than lay the egg right away, she applied another shell to the egg, a thinner soft-shell. The colorant was applied once more, giving it that gritty look you see before she laid it. Do you have any other theories for this egg-stremely odd egg?
