Homesteading: Normal or Just a Fad?

Look for the full video on This Humble Homestead’s social media pages.

I’ve had tons of comments about the homesteading “fad” both in person and online, and there is a lot to say on this subject. If we’re talking about a normal way of life that has been sustainable and around for all of time, then that’s homesteading. And something with that kind of longevity is in no way a fad.

Grocery Stores

But let’s talk grocery stores! The first grocery store was the Piggly Wiggly, which was established in 1916. A fad of convenience, but led to too much convenience “food.”

Vaccinated Meat

How about vaccinated meat? Cows were first vaccinated in the 1800s. Vacca is Latin for cow, and cows were used to test vaccines that would be used in humans. Pretty crazy. Cows continue to be vaccinated even today, which means we’re all ingesting what they are given. Even today, vaccines are all experimental. Not normal. A fad created by people who maybe had good intentions here and there, but have done massive damage overall. 1 in 100 kids are autistic now? Not normal even a little bit. A fad (and a pretty terrible one).

Hyper-processed Foods

Hyper processed foods! They shouldn’t even be called food. Food is something meant to nourish our bodies, and this processed garbage does none of that. It does however contribute massively to horrible diseases plaguing our society. Diabetes, heart disease, cancer, obesity….the list is long. Food factories are just sterilized processing plants for what humans consume. Just a gross way of producing those highly processed foods out there. Another fad.

Industrialized Farming

Another fad, industrialized farming began as a way to process food in a bigger way in order to feed more of the population, even providing food worldwide. Unfortunately, because of government interference, industrialized farming is filled with problems that cause harm to people, including convincing the population to eat certain foods that humans should not consume in high quantities, in order to sell more of them. This was a huge issue with wheat and the reason why wheat is a big part of breakfast. If you want to learn more about that, look up The Great Grain Robbery of the 1970s.

Chemical Ridden Farms

Chemical ridden farms are another fad and another way to add toxins into our foods. It began in the 1800’s with synthetic fertilizers and has just gotten worse since then. Sure they give it names like “pest control,” but none of that was meant to be consumed by humans.

Pasteurized Milk

Pasteurized milk! Cows, which have been milked by humans for thousands of years were being improperly kept in city areas. Their environments were filthy and as a result, humans were getting sick. So rather than help people develop a better system for managing their cows and milking routine, Louis Pasteur came up with an idea to boil the milk, destroying all traces of bacteria in the milk…good bacteria that is found in milk and is GOOD for the human body, especially in the gut. This in turn made pasteurized milk difficult for many people to process and also left milk void of any nutrition. Yes, milk has calcium, magnesium, vitamin D, and tons of other amazing nutrients in it, but unfortunately, pasteurized milk does not. Yet another fad.

Just because it’s what you know, doesn’t mean it’s normal! Our society is backward in many ways.
