Well, I’ve finally gotten around to make our laundry detergent! I’ve been wanting to do it for so long, but where to find the time? I found a fantastic recipe at The Family Homestead. And, the wonderful Crystal has broken it down for us and found that this recipe only costs $ .71 for two gallons of detergent! Her recipe is simple and easy to make and didn’t take me long at all to throw together.
1. Shred 1/3 bar of Fels Naptha soap into a pot of 6 cups of water.
2. Cook on the stove until the soap is melted.
3. Stir in 1/2 cup of borax.
4. Stir in 1/2 cup of washing soda.
5. Pour 4 cups of hot water into the bucket where your soap will be stored.
6. Add the soap to the water and mix.
7. Add one gallon of water plus six cups of water to the soap mixture.
8. Allow the soap to settle for 24 hours before using. This will give it time to gel a bit. And, as Crystal tells us, the detergent should be the texture of egg drop soup. And don’t be concerned if the soap does not create a lot of suds in your machine. It’s the ingredients that clean the clothes so nicely!
Use 1/2 cup of detergent per load. Happy Washing!!!
