{Recipe} Laundry Detergent

Well, I’ve finally gotten around to make our laundry detergent!  I’ve been wanting to do it for so long, but where to find the time?  I found a fantastic recipe at The Family Homestead.  And, the wonderful Crystal has broken it down for us and found that this recipe only costs $ .71 for two gallons of detergent!  Her recipe is simple and easy to make and didn’t take me long at all to throw together.2516169_orig

1.  Shred 1/3 bar of Fels Naptha soap into a pot of 6 cups of water.3565909_orig

2.  Cook on the stove until the soap is melted.
3.  Stir in 1/2 cup of borax.
4.  Stir in 1/2 cup of washing soda. 4060444_orig

5.  Pour 4 cups of hot water into the bucket where your soap will be stored.
6.  Add the soap to the water and mix.399284_orig

7.  Add one gallon of water plus six cups of water to the soap mixture.9713360_orig

8.  Allow the soap to settle for 24 hours before using.  This will give it time to gel a bit.  And, as Crystal tells us, the detergent should be the texture of egg drop soup.  And don’t be concerned if the soap does not create a lot of suds in your machine.  It’s the ingredients that clean the clothes so nicely!

Use 1/2 cup of detergent per load.  Happy Washing!!!
