Does everyone have a ginormous box of random crayons? It seems to me that if you leave two crayons alone in there, they multiply like bunnies. Well, we have such a box. It contains both washable and unwashable crayons, which I don’t allow in my house these days. Plus, I have a wonderful recipe for beeswax crayons that I tried and I just need to perfect it before making them our main crayons. All this to say that I was trying to find something to do with all these crayons.
Every year we participate in the shoebox drive with Operation Christmas Child through Samaritan’s Purse (which I will write about soon!). I decided to melt down all these crayons and make new ones for the shoeboxes.
All you need is a double boiler to melt the crayons and a mold to shape the new ones. So, first Chloe helped me organized them by their color and take off their papers. She did a fabulous job.
Next, I melted each color one at a time in a can inside a pot of boiling water.
When the crayons were completely melted, I poured them (very carefully!) into the mold that we chose. Then, I stuck them in the freezer for about 10 minutes until they had cooled and hardened.
Then we just popped them out of the mold and they were ready! Now we can bag them and get them ready for those precious little ones who will discover them in their shoebox gifts!
